How to start a blog in Nigeria
Hello friend, I know you are looking for an easy and straight forward guide on how to start a blog and monetize it, that’s why you are here. Not to worry, you’ve landed on the right page. Blogging is what I do so you are in safe hands. And by the end of this post, you would have known how to start a blog.
I will show you a step by step guide on how you can start your blog within 15 minutes and get it running by following these simple steps:
1. Have a blog name and niche in mind
Firstly, what is a blog?
A blog is a content marketing website used for positioning yourself fir maximum influence and marketing of your brand, products and services.
Do you need to start a blog? Of course yes, by all means please do. Blogging is one of the most stress free means of giving your business an online presence no matter your type of business. You don’t have to be a guru before you can have a blog.
You can start a blog irrespective of your location, your present job experience or your age. More often than not, the main aim of starting a blog is to generate income online.
Some of y’all think starting a blog requires technical skills and expertise, but no, it is actually super easy to start blogging if you follow the steps in this guide.
The first step is to know what you want to blog on and the name you want to give your blog. This is what your readers will first see when they land on your page or see your ads. It could be your own name or words representing what your blog is about or you can combine words, whichever way suits you. The blog name will be something like yourblog.com or yourblog.com.ng.
A blog’s niche is the area on which you will be publishing content. Niches include fashion, lifestyle, gossip, entertainment, health and others.
Generally, in Nigeria, the best niches that draw traffic quickly to your blog are:
- Health and fitness
- Relationships and marriage
- Money and business opportunities
- Wealth creation
These niches are evergreen in Nigeria. People constantly have a starving need for solutions to problems within these niches and you can easily pull traffic if you have answers to their questions within these niches.
Niche and Domain selection
For example, you can start a blog on fertility. A lot of couples are having issues in this area so if you are knowledgeable in this area, you can start a blog on it and even promote fertility products (the products have to be authentic so your blog maintains credibility) to them. For this kind of blog, you can incorporate a word that clearly shows what your blog is about in the blog name like fertilityissueswithdrmary.com. If the name you want is not available, your hosting company will make suggestions for you.
2. Make your blog go live online (web hosting)
After deciding on your blog name and niche, you have to get your blog online. This is where web hosting comes in. your web hosting company is like your blog’s office where all files are kept safe and secure. They also make sure that people can access your blog online when they type in your URL or click on your link. So you have to select a web hosting company that is reliable so they can access the blog anytime.
Personally, I recommend Bluehost for web hosting. It provides WordPress compatible blogs and that is what most bloggers use. Having a WordPress blog is the smartest option as a blogger and Bluehost is one the best and cheapest hosting company out there.
You can go to the Bluehost’s website and register an account to get started. I recommend choosing the 36 month plan as it is the cheapest in the market. That’s what I use. You get your domain running for 3 years.
Fill out the necessary information and submit and boom! Your website is live.
3. Start designing your website with a WordPress theme or page-builder
After setting up your domain and hosting, you need to start designing your blog to make it look attractive to your readers. If you’ve not done it before, you might think the process is difficult and technical but trust me, it is not. I design all my blogs myself.
Designing your blog with WordPress is the smartest thing as it makes it faster and easier.
You can also make use of a page-builder if you don’t want to use WordPress themes.
After installing WordPress on your blog, you need to install some plugins. The most important ones are:
- Yoast SEO
- Google Analytics
- WP Rocket
4. Write and publish your first blogpost
Having strong content on you blog makes your readers come back for more and the rule of blogging is the more traffic you have the more money you can make with your blog. Before you create your first blogpost, you have to do these:
- Look out for what other bloggers in your niche are publishing on and the amount of traffic they get.
- Look out for topics and ideas in your niche and write them all out. Brainstorm on the things you know your target audience want to read about. Think of their problems and how you can provide solutions through your blogposts.
- Use keyword research software like Ahrefs or Google Keywords to get more ideas. You get to know what people are searching for and other related keywords to the ones you’ve come up with already.
- Take all the keywords you have gathered and join the similar ones together. You can then edit it to suit your audience.
- Look for content that fits your niche. Make sure the contents are what your readers want and they have the capability of drawing traffic to your blog.
After you have all these in place, you can then start the writing process. An ideal blogpost should reach 1000 words. Proofread the post and make sure it is well formatted and broken down into sections. Hit the publish button and boom! Your blogpost is live.
5. Promoting your blog
After publishing your blogposts, you have to drive traffic to them and that is where promotion comes in. you have to promote your contents heavily so you can have the kind of traffic that will your blog monetizable.
Promotion with Social media
The most common way of promoting your blog is through social media (that’s probably how you found me). Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn are the most popular social media networks today. You have to know which of the social media platform you audience makes use of most so you promote your blog there.
You can also grow your audience with email newsletters. Using email newsletters helps to engage your audience and build a long lasting relationship with them.
You can integrate an ethical bribe (free content which could be a book or a video) into your blogpost which people get as soon as they opt-in. they subscribe to your email list and keep getting follow-up mails from you.
Having an email list also helps you notify them of your new blogposts or other content on your blog. There are various tools to use for this. You can make use of Getresponse, Aweber, Mailchimp and other email auto-responders.
You can also network with other bloggers within your niche or have an interview with someone popular in your niche. Another good way of promoting your blog is to learn from other bloggers.
6. Monetizing your Blog
Although, monetizing your blog is one of the reasons why you started it, you first have to build a lasting relationship with your readers and delivering value before trying to sell them a course or offering your services. The various ways of monetizing your blog are:
- Amazon Kindle Publishing
- Affiliate marketing
- Brand advertising
- Selling digital courses
7. Develop a content strategy and publishing schedule for your blog
If you want your readers to be committed to your blog, you have to keep you blog organized and properly managed.
You also have to be consistent with how often you publish new content on your blog. Publishing consistently helps your readers know when to come back for more and also know the kind of content that works for your blog. You can start with publishing twice per week and then move increase it as time goes on.
8. Make your blogposts stand out with creative media
Studies have shown that inserting images into blogposts gets them more views than those with no pictures. There are various websites where you can get high quality pictures to use in your blogposts for free. We have Unsplash, Death to Stock, Pixabay, Life of Pix and many others.
You can also use Canva and Visme for blog design.
Finally, starting a blog can be super exciting but the excitement can fizzle out quickly if you are not willing to put in the hard-work and consistency needed to make the blog great.
Make sure you connect with your readers and always churn out great content then the money will start rolling in.
I hope you now feel up to it to start your own blog and make it to the top.
Start your blog without stress
If you are interested in creating a platform that earns you at least N250,000 per month then blogging is for you.
I also started like you and had no idea of what I was doing. This was until I met a fellow Nigerian who is making waves in the blogging industry and boasts of a 6-figure income monthly.
He taught me his method, I applied it and I’m getting results. I introduced it to other people to try it too and they got even more awesome results than I do.
Then I felt I should show you this same method, which is why I wrote this article.
The present condition of this country and unemployment rates is not appealing so everyone is looking for a better life including you and I.
Blogging is a whole vibe right now and many people want to join the moving train because they’ve seen celebrity bloggers and how they are making millions of naira per month from their blogs.
Presently in Nigeria, you can start a blog with as little as N6,000 and make twenty times of this per month if you follow this method (do the maths and calculate the profit).
You don’t even need tens of thousands of visitors to make this profit. All you need is one thousand visitors and you are good to go.
If you are truly interested in making a 6-figure income monthly from a simple blog, I think you should watch this video that was put together by the guy I mentioned earlier. You have to hurry before he takes it down.
